New research reveals that individuals who come off new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals using these drugs need to be informed of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a return to original mass in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.
Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually have a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Condition?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Experiences
Users who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful return of appetite.
"I experienced a trigger activating and you become starving," recalled a patient.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Use is higher among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, experts emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success hinges on integrated lifestyle changes.
