Sheffield Wednesday Deals with a 'Significant Problem', Declares New Football Authority

'We will play a key role in football's future' - independent football regulator David Kogan

The team's persistent issues represent a a "serious issue" and the football regulator is seeking powers to examine team situations in such situations, the recently named head the official has declared.

Through a comprehensive talk, the regulator, who was named to the position this week, showed understanding towards Wednesday's fanbase.

Kogan met with four supporter groups associated with the South Yorkshire club recently.

The team have been experiencing difficulties in multiple areas in this season, with the club failing to pay players on time on multiple instances, including in last month.

"Evidently Wednesday represents a serious issue for football authorities and a significant problem for football," the chairman stated.

"Wednesday stands as one of the great brands for English football and in recent days we have met fan representatives.

"Our aim is to acquire the ability... which will enable us to take Wednesday and comparable cases brought to our attention if they need to be investigated and acted upon."

Financial Struggles and Leadership Concerns

The club's controversial proprietor the Thai businessman suggested earlier this year he would be open to selling the club at Hillsborough, but he has not been able to secure a deal with prospective buyers.

Missed wage deadlines on time in spring months led to sanctions by the English Football League (EFL) in summer, preventing the club from carrying out any transfers or loans for the next three transfer windows, although that restriction was lifted in the end of the transfer window.

Official's Viewpoint

The chairman stated: "The position was created for the fans of Sheffield Wednesday, Bury or any football club where supporters are loyal to a local institution that has represented their community in many cases.

"I completely understand the team's plight, as I do for every team that in modern times have encountered failure, or nearly ceased operations, for causes separate from the followers."

When asked if the regulator could force an owner to sell a club if they are judged inappropriate, the chairman responded: "Should the inquiry concern 'would we intervene in the final instance?', the reply is once we assemble the facts and know what's going on, we will."

But the regulator clarified that compelling proprietors to divest clubs would be treated as a "last resort" and the oversight body would choose to collaborate with owners.

"The last thing what we want to do is begin intervening in an particular organization, an particular chairman, without being able to work with that chairman to fix the challenges confronting the team and the chairman's encountering," the regulator explained.

"In actuality, when you review the record of the game, over the last 20 or 30 years there have been certain proprietors, few in number, but certain individuals who have acted carelessly in the approach they have taken toward their organizations and finally don't wish to take responsibility for the coming years."

'Mistakes could erase significant advances'

Kogan met with delegates from multiple organizations to lay out the remit of the regulator on Wednesday and insisted it was a "progressive gathering" with a "substantial involvement" from the National League to the Premier League.

"This position carries substantial significance, because if errors are made, if the world of football gets it wrong, the remarkable development accomplished might evaporate incredibly quickly," Kogan said.

"And that's what nobody wants in the context of the English game is a substantial accomplishment - we've got to keep it going.

"Substantial financial resources entering the sport and has been invested for the last 20 or 25 years, because there's no guarantee it will persist in entering the game, which is one of the reasons why I think we have to adopt a precise perspective on challenges and obviously, of the next two or three years."

Premier League Concerns

Top flight officials resisted the establishment of an oversight body because of concerns about detrimental effects on the top-flight's competitiveness, but Kogan said: "I'm absolutely committed to the success and growth as an economic entity of the elite league.

"As someone who appreciates the apprehension regarding damaging the division as a high-quality offering of the nation. But concurrently, if you talk to the Premier League after the recent gathering, they would have had a high level of reassurance -and, actually, they have been advising us privately they have a considerable comfort."

Political Connections

The chairman continues to confront a "full inquiry" by the official appointments authority after he revealed he contributed money to the Labour Party in recent years.

The official contributed funds to government minister Lisa Nandy's leadership campaign, along with that of the government leader.

"I've been completely open about my previous political affiliation [with Labour], and that ideological connection terminated the day the parliamentary committee confirmed my selection," the regulator explained.

"I currently have no participation in any type of partisan engagement."
